Mt Buller - Victorian Interschools and Events
Mt Buller hosted Victoria’s very first ‘Interschools’ competition back in 1958 when Melbourne Grammar School and Scotch College kicked off a winter tradition that has endured for over 65 years. Mt Buller is proud of its rich snowsports history and fosters future generations of skiers and boarders through events including Interschools at state and national level, a bustling Ski & Snowboard School seasonal program, race club and Olympic Training facilities for the Australian freestyle team.
In 2024 Mt Buller marks an important milestone – 100 years since the first party from the Ski Club of Victoria skied on the mountain back in 1924. It will be a season of celebrations as the mountain reflects on a century of skiing and looks to the future.
ABOUT THE RESORT
Just a three-hour drive from Melbourne there are many reasons why Mt Buller is one of Australia’s most popular alpine resorts attracting skiers and boarders to its slopes and scenic alpine village.
Buller Ski Lifts is proudly a locally owned family business and the mountain boasts Victoria’s largest network of lifts and 300+ hectares of terrain. 80+kms of mostly groomed runs span the resort area and range from the wide gentle beginner slopes of Bourke St and Burnt Hut to the popular blue runs Family Run and Shakey Knees with plenty of challenges for those seeking bumps and steeps on the southern side of the mountain. A skilled park team builds and maintains a rider-cross course and two superb terrain parks at Koflers and Skyline enabling riders to progress with a range of features and jumps. When conditions allow super size jumps are sculpted up on the Summit for experienced riders.
Mt Buller is continually improving the ski experience for guests on and off the ski area. Developments in recent years include additional storage up in the summit area adding 100 megalitres to the village supply and snowmaking and additional pumping infrastructure to deliver more snow to where it’s needed. In 2024 the resort is adding another all-weather snow factory to the snowmaking line up taking the count of these versatile snowmakers to five around the resort area. A dedicated docking station for a snow factory has been completed at the top of the Chamois run supporting freestyle and aerial training and events including the ABOM Mogul Challenge, JNats and Interschools mogul events. Mt Buller is at the forefront with programs and continuous improvements to conserve energy and water and ensure sustainable operations in our fragile alpine environment. World class lighting installations on Chamois and Bourke Street enable events and training to stretch from day to night.
Mt Buller is famous for après experiences and a lively village with multiple dining and bar options. Recent improvements to the deck at Spurs including a DJ deck and delicious slow-cook BBQ make it a must-visit location on a sunny day. Arlberg Hotel has come to the party adding an al-fresco rooftop bar to their renovated dining offering and the Bull Run Cantina nestled at the base of Standard Run is a local secret for Mexican inspired fare.
One of the things people love Mt Buller is the picturesque alpine village nestled up in the snowline. There are more on-mountain beds at Mt Buller than in any alpine resort in Australia so ski-in, ski-out is a great way to get the complete winter experience. Strolling to dinner at any one of the 30+ venues in the resort is easy and there are great take away options if you want to curl up by the fire. Guests love the convenience of skiing into the village, the après vibe, plenty of retail options and the huge range of accommodation from budget to bling. Visitors are often surprised at all the extras up here too like the alpine spa, Alpine Aurora light display in the village, sled dog experiences, indoor trampoline and climbing at the Airzone, massive cinema and well-stocked grocer.
The Mt Buller community is excited to again welcome the Victorian Interschools athletes and families for great times shared with good people in the mountains.
